As overnight temperatures plummet in Melbourne, Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO Chris Buckingham will be rolling out his sleeping bag and making a personal commitment to help people experiencing homelessness as part of the 2018 Vinnies CEO Sleepout.
Held on 21 June, this fundraiser is attended by around 200 Victorian CEOs and community leaders who agree to sleep out with nothing more than a piece of cardboard and a sleeping bag in the thick of winter. The objective is to raise funds and awareness for people experiencing homelessness and poverty.
The community can pitch in by sponsoring a participant or by making a donation directly to Vinnies.
“Public libraries help people in need every day of the week. We know that homeless people use our libraries as a safe place where they can access information and get support,” Mr Buckingham said.
“Homelessness in the Casey Cardinia region is often caused by family violence and financial distress – and sometimes just a stroke of misfortune. We can all make a difference by understating the root causes of homelessness, demonstrating compassion and supporting vital service providers like Vinnies.
“I am pleased to be able to pay it forward and do my bit to help people in need. I hope the community supports me as we raise much needed funds for Vinnies.”
Mr Buckingham has set a goal of raising $5000 prior to the sleepout, and has pledged to personally match every dollar donated to his campaign (up to $2,500).
